TÜBİTAK manages an earthquake related process
TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal made a presentation titled ‘Co-Development and Co-Success in the Field of Earthquake Research’ at the ‘24th ATAG Workshop Earthquake Research Special Call Projects Introduction Session’
Expressing that scientists are approaching Turkey’s needs with a science-based approach, they are trying to learn what can be learned in terms of process management and how to create an impact in TÜBİTAK processes. Dr. Mandal noted that the TÜBİTAK 1001 Earthquake Research Special Call is also a part of this. Mandal emphasized that when the ‘Web of Science’ oriented articles of 2021 are examined with the focus of the earthquake keyword, it is seen that the search for solutions to the earthquake should be taken in a wider disciplinary framework. Referring to what TÜBİTAK has done about the earthquake, Prof. Dr. Mandal noted that after the İzmir earthquake, investigations were made on the site, and a special call with a special budget, was opened in order to produce an emergency solution. Stating that they participated in TÜBİTAK’s “International Active Tectonics and Seismicity Workshop” and contributed to the special issue of the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences, Mandal said: “I want TÜBİTAK’s centers and institutes to look at the process differently. I expect them to take part in the processes in a way that includes the entire ecosystem.”
“We want the support made by private calls to be shared more with the public”
Stating that they aim to increase the awareness of earthquakes in every age group, Prof. Dr. Mandal said that: “We set out with the target of 100 workshops in 81 cities, and now we have reached 60 in the number of workshops. We used the earthquake as the theme in the Experimental Technology Workshops application exam two years ago, in order to raise awareness to all age groups. We have a researcher supported under the National Leading Researcher Program. Within the scope of the 1001 Program, we opened a special call for earthquakes. TÜBİTAK manages an earthquake-related process in many areas such as raising human resources, raising awareness, instant response, transferring it to the society through conferences and journals, and making research processes more thematic.” Mentioning that they also used the experience of making special calls regarding earthquakes and process management in mucilage, Mandal expressed that: “We want the support made with special calls to be shared more with the public.” Stating that earthquake research includes projects involving all disciplines, including social and human sciences, in the projects supported within the scope of the call, Mandal said: “We have project coordinators and researchers from 41 different institutions in Turkey. Our support, which has the capacity to set an example for the world, increases our motivation.”
